International Material Data System (IMDS) has been established as a computerized resource in the automotive industry material data system. This information is compiled for each component in a vehicle to work to reduce hazardous content and for use at End of Life (ELV) to determine possible reuse and recycling options. [more]
IMDS has three main objectives as follows:
- Limit use of hazardous substances in vehicles from the design phase. This eliminates banned heavy metals including lead, mercury, cadmium and hexavalent chromium.
- Automotive OEMs design and produce new vehicles so they can be easily dismantled at end of life. This includes reuse, recycling and energy recovery through incineration.
- Increase the amount of recycled content used in vehicles and other products. The purpose is to create a larger market for recycled materials.
Timco Rubber is now a registered supplier with IMDS and is able to provide this component information for automotive applications.
